Safer Ballymun: What is it?

Safer Ballymun is a partnership involving local residents, An Garda Síochána, Dublin City Council and Ballymun Regeneration Limited. This working group meets on a monthly basis, and has an action based, problem solving focus. Safer Ballymun aims to assess, monitor and control the level of anti-social behaviour in the area.

Safer Ballymun: What does it do?

  • Involves residents in decision making
  • Improves estate management
  • Reduces crime and disorder
  • Tackles the adverse impact of alcohol and drug abuse
  • Enhances local policing
Safer Ballymun wants to make Ballymun a safer, more pleasant place in which to live.

Work in progress

  • Street cleaning: Two new street sweeping machines are now operating on Main Street.
  • CCTV improvements: Systems are being upgraded on an ongoing basis.
Anti-social behaviour in your area

What to do if you have anti-social behaviour in your area?
  • Contact the housing officer at your local area office.
  • If you think it is a criminal offence, call An Garda Siochana, who will handle all information in a sensitive manner.
This is our place, our community, our home. Let’s work together to tackle anti-social behaviour.
Successes to date

Safer Ballymun has succeeded in:
  • Putting more feet on the beat and doubling the number of Gardai on Ballymun's streets.
  • Organising regular walkabouts between DCC, BRL and An Garda Siochana.
  • Increasing the reporting of crime by the public to An Garda Síochána.
  • Improving litter management on Main Street.
  • Increasing crime detection rates.
  • Opening two new DCC area offices; one in Coultry and one in Balcurris.
Dublin City Council on the move

New estate offices have been opened in Coultry Neighbourhood Centre and one is soon to be opened in Balcurris. Both offices will be shared with local forums. This is part of DCC plans to work directly within the community and to provide a more accessible service to local residents.

Unmuzzled dogs

Have you ever felt intimidated by unmuzzled dogs in Ballymun?

Certain species of dog have to be muzzled by law. Dog species requiring muzzles are specified in the Tenancy Agreement for Dublin City Council tenants.

Where the dog owner is a tenant, DCC may take action against an owner who fails to muzzle their pet. Certain species are not allowed to be held in flat complexes. If an offender is not a tenant of DCC, then a dog warden can be notified and called to deal with unmuzzled dogs.

Phone your local area office if you have concerns.
Vandalised trees

Fears have been growing about the damage to plaques at the base of the trees planted by the “amaptocare” art project in Ballymun. 271 trees have now been planted as part of the first planting season, which ran until May this year. The trees, featuring the words and thoughts of the people who bought them have been planted in public spaces throughout Ballymun. Each tree is an expression of the individual who donated it and paid a minimum of €50 in an effort to improve the area and contribute to the new Ballymun.

We must ensure that we, as a community mind these trees so that they grow to maturity and enhance our new environment.

If you see a vandalised plaque, please call the amaptocare office on 01 883 2110.
